CAPTAINS DRIVE IN 2009

Geoff Steel ‘Drives off’ to celebrate the start of his new year as
2009 Commanders Golf Club Captain, Oakmere Park.
As dawn broke on Friday 2nd January 2009 Sutton in Ashfield’s Geoff Steel hit a superb drive down the first fairway at Oxton’s Oakmere Park to start his year as Captain of the Commanders Golf Club.
Many club members braved the sub zero temperature to witness this important event, wishing Geoff a successful year in office. They are pictured holding the Passing on Hope banner, the local charity that Geoff has chosen to support through the fund raising events during his year as Club Captain.
As he stood on the first tee Geoff was subject to much good humoured banter as to how far he would hit the drive, with the members running a sweepstake on where the ball would land! Geoff’s response was to ‘hit a belter, straight down the fairway’ saying, “I’m absolutely delighted to be supported by so many of my friends, the members, and to have hit such a respectable drive under so much pressure!”
The Passing on Hope charity is dedicated to serving the needs of young people in the North Ashfield area, where Geoff lives, addressing positively such teenage problems as drug and alcohol abuse, unwanted pregnancies, youth crime and bullying. The charity’s Executive Chairman Mike Collins who was present amongst the onlookers on the first tee told us “We are thrilled to have been chosen by Geoff as the charity for his year as Captain and we look forward to supporting him and helping to make his next twelve months very successful and enjoyable.
