golf is about.
A

Club
Away Weekend to Forest Pines
Golf & Country Club
Twenty
three members of the Admirals Club spent a very enjoyable 2 days
at one of the top golfing venues in the country on the 11th &
12 July. The Forest Pines Golf Club is a stunning 27 hole course
twisting and turning through majestic pine trees. With lush fairways
and excellent undulating greens the three loops of 9 offered a very
stiff challenge to all of the attendees. Pairs and Singles Stableford
competitions were played over the 2 days as well as nearest the
pins. The weather over the 2 days was mixed being sunny and breezy
on the first day and with rain for about the first 6 holes on the
second.
The
evening meal was enjoyed whilst watching the World Cup Final with
the prize presentations taking place at half time. The second day
presentation took place in the Pines Bar just before departure home.
£52

Fourteen
Ladies enjoyed a glorious sunny Lady Captain's Away-day at Newark

lovely course saw very good scores with Christine Muse and Patricia
Wilcox coming in third place, Shirley Rudge and Sue Reynolds came
second, with winners Lesley Young and Steaphanie Freeman. Nearest

Well done everyone.

Motor’s Summer League Cup v Mapperley
The
second league match of the season was contested at Mapperley Golf
Club on
a beautiful warm sunny summer the
evening on Thursday,
3rd June.
The coarse was in excellent condition when Daryl St John Jones and
Captain Bob Ward lead off in the first match of 6 against home captain
Ken Shaw and his playing partner Tim Newham. They were closely followed
by Jason Davies and John Manners from Oakmere playing John Spencer
and Spencer Connerley for Mapperley. First blood went to the home
side in match 3 where Mark Collins and Alan Roberts for Oakmere Park
went down 7 and 5 to local pair Geoff Manley and Rik Wilson. They
were quickly followed by Matthew Pinnick and Dan Waterhouse losing
3 and 2 to John Raines and John Lawton for Mapperley, putting the
home side in a 2-0 commanding lead. This very quickly became 3-0 when
Joe Aslam and Malcolm Twist lost 4 and 3 to Roy Shipton and Paul Ewert
of the home side. Home advantage was again playing a big part in deciding
this match. Not too many teams have actually taken any points from
this venue where Mapperley enjoy a huge home advantage.
Match 2, with Jason and John then playing some excellent golf, brought
the first point of the evening when they returned a 5 and 4 victory
to leave the match at 3-1 to the home side. Suddenly, things started
to look brighter for Oakmere Park, when Match 1, Daryl and Bob recording
another victory, by 1 hole, to set the match at 3-2 to the home side.
With fingers and legs crossed the rest of the assembled team members
watched in anticipation as Match 6, Dermot Duncan and Michael White
approached the 18th, not realising that the home team had a 1 hole
advantage, Michael dropped in a 40ft birdie put to leave the Oakmere
Park side believing that they could half the match, only for Peter
Adams to make par with a shot to half the hole and take the tie by
1 hole and the match 4-2.
Overall the Mapperley team used their home advantage to great effect
and deserved the victory. Leaving Oakmere Park still looking for their
first point from this venue.
The
Blue Ribbon Trophy
On
Tuesday, 31st May another very good mixed competition was held with
20 entrants competing for this significant trophy. Afterwards Bob
Ward, the Club Captain, gave a short talk on the history of this competition
which was originally competed for in 2003 when the new course was
opened. This event was the seventh anniversary to the day.
When the new course was opened with the new lay-out, The Director
of Golf invited former junior and now US tour professional , Greg
Owen, to do the honours along with the Clubs President, Mrs Mortensen.
The ribbon was cut with the same pair of sissors which are presented
to this day to the winners of the competition.
Well done to Julie & Terry Craggs winning with 41 point with Nancy
and Bill Sheffield close second, Christine Hall and Rick Richardson
coming third.
Well done everybody, lovely day, and another very friendly mixed event.
Southwell
Motor’s Summer League Cup v Ramsdale
The
2010 Summer League for the Southwell Motor’s Cup got off to
a winning start for Oakmere Park in their home tie with local rivals
Ramsdale Park. The first match got underway in cool clear weather
in the early evening and was keenly contested by Darryl St John Jones
and Dale Shepherd playing for Oakmere against Ian Riddell and Ryan
Aldridge playing for Ramsdale. Some steady golf from the home team
using their considerable local coarse knowledge saw them return a
3 and 2 score to take the first match. Second up were Jason Davies
and Roy Griffin for Oakmere playing Mark Bailey and Paul Crowther
from Ramsdale. This match remained close until the turn when the local
pair pulled away from their visitors to record a 3 and 1 victory.
Chris Wilson and Andy Hall for Oakmere against Mark Stanymore and
David Blagdon for Ramsdale contested match 3. Again a very close tie
with both pairs playing nip and tuck golf saw the tie finish halved
Match 4 paired Iain Cheshire and John Manners for Oakmere against
John Moulten and his partner Mo. This match saw an extremely close
tie going all the way to the eighteenth with the visitors taking the
tie by the narrowest of margins of 1 hole.
Match 5 saw Lloyd Young returning from a long-term injury to partner
Martin Cooper for Oakmere against Mick Gant and Billy Coulthard for
the visitors. The tie again saw some exciting close golf going all
the way to the last hole for the tie to again be halved and spoils
shared.
Match 6 saw Mick Cotterill and Nick Opplin contest the last match
of the evening against Sach and Dean Neville. The visitors once again
put up stiff resistance until late in the round only for the home
side to pull away to record a 2-hole victory. The final score being
4 –2 to Oakmere once again shows that home local knowledge will
no doubt play a big part in the final destination of the Southwell
Motor’s Summer League Cup.
The
Ladies Open
A
lovely Spring day saw 20 teams enter the Admirals Ladies Betterball
Open on Thursday, 13th May with players from eight visiting Clubs
taking part. Most of the ladies were able to stay for the prize giving
which saw Diane Hofton and Julie Walkden (Oakmere Park Admirals GC)
the winners with 37 points. Julie Craggs and Ruth Pinnick (Oakmere
Park Admirals GC) in second place with 36 and third with 35 points
(back 9) going to Judy Fishel and Kate Crowther (Ramsdale Park GC).
Prizes were also given for 4th place, nearest the pin and nearest
the line. The Ladies Captain, Angela Robinson presented the prizes.

Friendly
match against Nottinghamshire Police
On
Thursday the 6th May, in cool overcast conditions our Captain Bob
Ward and playing partner Jason Davies led off from the front. Bob
recorded a nett birdie on the first hole, only to be outdone by opposing
team Willie Colquhoun and Mark Phillips, the latter making a 12 foot
putt for an Eagle 3. Some close call golf ensued until the latter
stages for Bob and Jason to pull away to record the first victory
4 and 3.
The second match was contested by Nick Opplin and Mick Cotterill against
Chris Marshall and Andy Townsend for the Police, who also went on
to win 4 and 2. Next away saw Chris Wilson and Paul Ellis play Stewart
Newlands and John May. Chris and Paul played some solid golf but were
overcome 3 and 2 with some professional play from the visitor Stewart
Newlands. This put the police back into the match at 2 matches to
one with 3 to play.
The fourth match saw Joe Aslam and Mark Connors paired against Craig
Pitchford and Andy Collins. Joe and Mark sealed the match with a 4
and 2 victory. Mark helped to push towards the win by chipping in
at the 12th from 70 yards out.
Match 5 saw Richard Hines and Chris Cooper take on Andy Pullan and
Paul Johnson to record an easy 6 and 5 victory. Match 6 saw John Manners
and Dermot Duncan bring the match to a close with a close fought match
3 and 2.
The evening finished with the customary after match meal and drinks.
Both teams were complimentary of the condition of the coarse, congratulations
to Richard Bond and his staff are in order.
Stan
Wright Trophy
The
mixed competition for the Stan Wright Trophy took place on a windswept
May Day Bank holiday. Whilst there were some late withdrawalsdue to
injuries with Kevin Gallagher having sprained his ankle and Tracy
Aslam having hurt her back ( best wishes to both) there was keen competition
in difficult conditions with frequent heavy showers. The winners were
Christine Muse and Steven Dean with 38 points who scraped home by
a single point from Sue Reynolds and Dec Kelly. All enjoyed the event
and thanks go to the Ladies for organising the event.

Charlton
Trophy
The
Charlton Trophy 2 from 4 stableford competition
was held on a cold and windy April, Easter Bank Holiday Monday.
Scoring 77 points it was easily won by Colin and Julie Walkden,
Christine Muse and Steven Dean. They are shown opposite along with
the Lady Captain, Angela Robinson and Captain Bob Ward who presented
the trophy to the winners. Just 5 teams entered this traditional
mixed Easter competition.
Competition
Entry Fee Increase
At
the meeting of the Admirals Men's Committee on the 14th January 2010
it was agreed that from the 1st April 2010 the standard cost of entry
into all Admirals Men's Club Competitions would be increased
by 50p from £2.50 to £3.00.
This is the first increase since April 2003 and is line with inflation
since that time. It has been made necessary to meet increasing
costs whilst maintaining a balanced budget for the Admirals Men's
Club.
The increased fees will continue to be split as before: 77% of all
competition fees collected returned as the competition prize
fund and 23% retained to meet the running costs of the Admirals Men's
Club. The resulting increase in the Competition Prize fund will
be distributed as prizes as before.

miss out on this opportunity to play half price golf at nearly 1000
participating golf clubs. You only have to play once to cover the
cost of the card!
A County Card
gives its holder reduced green fees, usually 50% or more, not only
at all participating clubs in Nottinghamshire, but also at clubs
in 27 other counties. Click on the following link to view all the
counties and clubs involved:
Membership is
available to Ladies, Gents and Junior golfers and cards are issued
annually from the 1st April. The reduction is usually on the normal

4 persons in a party. Card holders may play once each year at any
of the listed clubs, although many of the clubs allow members more
than one visit.
The initial cost

reduced to £10 and all the initial 20 people will receive
a £5 refund. All the profit is used for the development of
junior golf in Nottinghamshire.

Did
you know? ~ Common misunderstandings about the rules of golf
“You
may rotate your ball so as to identify it without marking its position
as long as you do not move it off its spot”.
Wrong
- touching your ball to identify it anywhere on the course, without
announcing your intention to do so and marking its position first
will incur a one stroke penalty - Rule 18-2a.
Note a player must also give his opponent, marker or fellow-competitor
an opportunity to observe the lifting and replacement. The ball must
not be cleaned beyond the extent necessary for identification when
lifted under Rule 12-2.
"You
can remove leaves around your ball when its in a bunker"
Wrong
- You many not remove any leaves in a bunker without incurring a 2
stroke penalty. Similarly touching leaves, or other loose impediments,
(twigs, grass etc) lying in a bunker during the back swing
of your stroke (or practice stroke) will also incur a 2 stroke penalty
- Decision 13-4/33.
"If
your ball is immediately behind a tree and a burrowing animal cast
behind the ball would interfere with the player's back swing for a
stroke towards the green, but not with a sideways stroke, which is
the only reasonable stroke, you can take relief without penalty under
Rule 25-1b as you intend to play towards the green."
Wrong
- player may not obtain relief from an abnormal ground condition if
interference from such a condition would only occur through the player
using an unnecessarily abnormal direction of play. Therefore, in the
circumstances described, the player is not entitled to relief. Exception
to Rule 25-1b
“
You cannot ask a fellow competitor how far your ball is from the
hole, as this is asking for advice”.
Wrong
- information regarding the distance between two objects is public
information and not advice. Definition of Advice.
“You
are not allowed to enter the clubhouse during a round”.
Wrong
- you may leave the course at any time providing you do not unduly
delay your own play, that of your opponent, or any other competitor.
Decision 6-8a/2.7.
“You
cannot hold the flag stick with one hand and tap your ball into the
hole with the other”.
Wrong
- you may hold the flag stick while you are putting. But make sure
that you remove the flag stick so that your ball does not strike it,
and do not lean on it for assistance. Decision 17-1/ 5
.
“You
can only have the flag stick attended if your ball lies on the putting
green”.
Wrong
- you may have the flag stick attended when playing from anywhere
on the course. Rule 17-1.
“You
cannot hold an umbrella over your head while making a putt.”
Wrong
– but you may not get anyone else to hold an umbrella over you
while you make a stroke, as this would breach Rule 14-2.
“If
you accidentally hit your ball while making a practice swing the stroke
counts and you play the ball from wherever it comes to rest”.
Wrong
– because you did not intend to move your ball with the practice
swing no stroke has been made. There is no penalty for accidentally
moving your ball with a practice swing before playing a stroke from
a teeing ground, because the ball is not in play, but anywhere else
on the course there is a penalty of one stroke. In all cases the ball
must be replaced to where it was before you accidentally moved it.
Rule 18-2a.
“If
the wind, or gravity, moves your ball before you have addressed it
you may replace it without penalty”.
Wrong
– there is no penalty, but the ball must be played from where
it comes to rest, because wind and water are not outside agencies.
The way to remember this is that if you cause the ball to move it
has to be replaced and you incur a penalty stroke, but if it moves
because of wind etc then play it from where it comes to rest and there
is no penalty. Decision 18-1/12.
“You
can take relief from ruts made by tractors, animal footprints and
cracks in the ground”.
Wrong
– none of these are abnormal ground conditions under the Rules
and there is no relief. Rule 25-1.
However, under our clubs local rules a ball coming to rest on rutted
tractor tracks may be lifted without penalty and dropped within one
club length of the nearest point of relief not nearer the hole.
“If
you stand astride your line of putt you are penalised”.
Wrong
– there is no penalty if this type of stance is inadvertently
taken, or is taken to avoid standing on another player's line of putt.
The purpose of the Rule is to prevent the ‘croquet’ style
of putting and in these two cases the player is not taking their stance
for this purpose. Rule 16-1.
“There
is always a penalty if a player takes a practice swing near his ball
and knocks down leaves in the area of his intended swing”.
Wrong –
it depends on whether the area of the intended swing is definitely
improved. In some cases, the knocking down of a number of leaves
would not improve the area of the intended swing, as the player
still has to swing through a number of remaining leaves when making
his stroke. In such circumstances, there would be no breach of the
Rule. In other cases, the knocking down of a single leaf might improve
the area of the intended swing, incurring a penalty of two strokes.
It is always going to be a subjective call by the players involved.
Decision 13-2/22.

give their support.

Frith. Also in the group were the outgoing Men's and

Presentation
to the Club's Charity ~ Fountaindale School
On Tuesday, 27th January, Bob Ward and Nancy Sheffield visited Fountaindale
School in Mansfield to present a cheque for £1300. The money
had been donated by the members of Oakmere Park through various
fund raising activities throughout this year.
Fountaindale
School is a special needs day school for boys and girls aged from
3 to 19 years. All pupils have special education needs in relation
to their physical disabilities, but many have other difficulties.
These include severe medical conditions, speech and language problems,
moderate, severe, profound and multiple learning difficulties and
sensory impairments. The school encourages pupils to be an independent
as possible.
Bob
and Nancy had a very warm welcome and were taken on a interesting
tour of the school buy the 4 pupils shown in the picture. The money
donation will go towards a very special trip they are planning to
Iceland. It will be a ground breaking adventure as there as never
been a similar project in England for children with physical disabilities.
This will be a unique opportunity for 7 pupils (4 are shown in the
picture) to go to Iceland to undertake personal and team challenges
supported by their peers at Fountaindale. They will undertake parallel
experiments, both in Iceland and back at Fountaindale School and
compare results via live satellite links and the internet thereby
involving the whole school. The money we have raised will go towards
the £25K required for this major fund raising project.
Fountaindale
School is again the clubs nominated charity for this year so please
help and support all the activities we put on to raise money for
those who are clearly far less fortunate than ourselves and many
thanks again for the contributions you gave during last year.
